Packed full of power, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 is an incredibly capable laptop with an impressively RGB-clad exterior. If you're after a gaming laptop that's still somewhat portable but doesn't compromise at all on performance, it delivers. However, battery life isn't great and it does come at a high price.

Pros

  • Incredibly powerful
  • Fantastic 240Hz screen
  • Easy upgrades via quick-release panel
  • Cheaper than some competitors

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Keyboard doesn't include numpad
  • A lot of pointless RGB lighting
  • Quite poor battery life

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 is the smaller variant of the Scar 18, with similar features, design quirks and specs, but in a more compact and lightweight chassis. It runs at higher internal temperatures as a result, but doesn't sacrifice performance or capabilities in any way. And the RTX 5080 configuration tested here is better value for your money than the RTX 5090 model, although still expensive. But at the end of the day, choosing this over other options in its space will probably come down to the screen, as this is one of the few to offer a modern matte mini LED display and latest-gen specs.

Pros

  • refined chassis design, aesthetics and RGB
  • good inputs, decent IO
  • beautiful matte mini LED display
  • slightly more powerful than previous Scar in sustained loads and games
  • versatile power profiles, improved cooling over previous Scars
  • good audio with quad-speakers

Cons

  • black smudgy surfaces
  • ergonomics are still hit and miss
  • higher internal temperatures than on the 18-inch model
  • poor camera
  • expensive
